We watched THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACCROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION the other night. It was fine. I’ve seen it before, but it holds no special place in my heart as I know it does with many of my elder millennial and Gex-X peers. The incoherent plot, stilted dialogue, and pacing that gave no space for the characters to introspect or emote simply didn’t work for me because it wasn’t filtered through a patina of childhood nostalgia. This is not a dig; there’s a lot of crap I watched as a kid and still have a great fondness for that is not good and would surely also get me dragged on god’s cruel internet, except for the people who also liked the same thing as a kid. Anyhow, here’s my Letterboxd review.
After BUCKAROO BANZAI ended, whatever streaming service we were watching auto-played SPACE TRUCKERS, another low-budget, sci-fi movie, but one I had not seen before. Now, this movie seemed cool as hell. Dennis Hopper in a rare protagonist role, space sixteen wheelers, a cargo of killer robots, and lines like “you know for a sonofabitch, gimp rapist murderer, you’re okay!” What more could a person want out of a sci-fi film?
READING: TWELVE MONTHS, Jim Butcher
LISTENING: HAPPIER THAN EVER, Billie Eilish
WANTING: A proper digital camera. I’ve been wanting to get better at shooting photos for a while now. Figure if I’m doing this 365ish thing, it would be interesting to be able to take and share good photos (or at least better photos). Thinking of getting the Fujifilm X-T50. Several folks have recommended the Fuji line, and they also have good reviews. Good enough for me.
